IMPACT OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES

The Science

What’s Inspiring

In 2019 sales of electric cars increased 40% from 2018, accounting for 2.6% of global sales. Technological progress has also facilitated electricification of trucks, buses and other vehicles. Globally, in 2019 electric vehicles avoided the consumption of almost 0.6 million barrels of oil products per day and the electricity generated to supply these vehicles emitted about half of what would have been required for an equivalent fleet of internal combustion engine vehicles. Net emission reductions from electric vehicles would be even greater with the implementation of policies, such as those set forth in the Paris Agreement, since the result would be more rapid decarbonization of electricity generation.
