WORD IMAGE - DEFORESTATION

Greenhouse gases emitted when forests are cleared account for a fifth of global emissions from human activities. In 2017 the world lost 39 million acres of tropical trees, a record only exceeded by losses in 2016. Not only is CO2 emitted in the deforestation process, the world also loses the benefit of the CO2 absorbed by these trees, and the soil in which they grow, in the normal carbon cycle. Despite the well understood connection between deforestation and CO2 emissions, between August 2017 and July 2018, deforestation in the Amazon, the largest tropical forest in the world, increased 14%*, the greatest increase in a decade.
