United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Conference of the Parties, Twenty-first session COP21) Paris, December 2015
More than 38,000 delegates, including over 150 heads of state, gathered in Paris to seek a consensus on action to address the world's increasing concerns about climate change. When the conference was over an historic milestone had been achieved: 195 countries pledged to keep global warming “well below” 2 degrees Celsius and, if possible below 1.5 degrees – a level of warming considered highly dangerous to the earth. The pledges made by the countries are not yet sufficient to achieve that goal, and even the UN agreement acknowledges that much more work needs to be done.
Nonetheless, the agreement represents a monumental step towards addressing this urgent issue on a global basis.
